So, yesterday I talked about the Huff Post article pt 1, 15 things that glamour thinks you should HAVE by the time you're 30; today here are the 15 things you should KNOW. (though I would argue that the first list had some "knows" as well. like, you should "have" a belief. that's knowing, but whatever.)
By 30, you should know ...
1. How to fall in love without losing yourself.
~ this seems like a great idea. I, however, have not learned it. Shoot.
2. How you feel about having kids.
~ again, sounds good. I know how I feel right now, but it could easily change.
3. How to quit a job, break up with a man, and confront a friend without ruining the friendship.
~ sounds great. I suck at all 3.
4. When to try harder and when to walk away.
~ yes. I think I've figured this out.... but I'm not really sure.
5. How to kiss in a way that communicates perfectly what you would and wouldn’t like to happen next.
~ um.... this seems a little "hollywood" for me. I prefer to use my words. (hello, DTR)
6. The names of the secretary of state, your great-grandmothers, and the best tailor in town.
~ These seem like 3 very random things to put together. (btw, Hilary Clinton, Zualla and Willie (I only know 2 of 4, the others we always called by their last names and they died before I was born- but their names were so crazy I get points for that, right?), and in SC it was Anne - but I'm not sure about York)
7. How to live alone, even if you don’t like to.
~ I ABSOLUTELY agree with that. I'd also add "how to live with roommates, even if you don't like to." I've accomplished both, and both have their pros and cons.
8. Where to go -- be it your best friend’s kitchen table or a yoga mat -- when your soul needs soothing.
~ This is important. I would have liked to have seen them add church of something of the like to the list of suggestions, but points for not suggesting "the bottle" or "the fridge," though I might pick those 2 first, on some days.
9. That you can’t change the length of your legs, the width of your hips, or the nature of your parents.
~ you can kind of change the width of your hips, or at least the amount of cushioning around them. But other than that, this is true.
10. That your childhood may not have been perfect, but it’s over.
~ amen. Though at times, it's still worth remembering with fondness.
11. What you would and wouldn’t do for money or love.
~ You really should know this. Before you're at a crossroads for either. Though, I have learned, when you're at the crossroads, it's easier than you think to do the things you thought you wouldn't.
12. That nobody gets away with smoking, drinking, doing drugs, or not flossing for very long.
~ This is probably true. Though I'm still trying to get away without flossing as much as I can (sorry Lisa).
13. Who you can trust, who you can’t, and why you shouldn’t take it personally.
~ Yes. As I learned from You've Got Mail, "it's not personal, it's business." However, I still take it personally most of the time.
14. Not to apologize for something that isn’t your fault.
~ This is good. You should also know HOW to apologize for something that IS your fault. I think most people are worse at that.
15. Why they say life begins at 30
~ Okay, this I don't know. I gotta say, life from 20-30 was pretty good too. I might have made more mistakes and taken more stupid chances during that time - but I grew a lot and became who I am today. I might be more willing to believe them if they said "life stablizes at 30," but I don't know.....
So, thinking these over, I think I have more of the haves, than I know of the knows. How about you???

On those 30 Things....
So, I haven't written in awhile, not because I don't have anything to say, but it feels like because I have so much to say and so little time to organize it. But, after seeing several women post links to this article about the 30 things a woman should know and have by the time they're 30, I thought I'd bust out of "retirement" and do some commentary. First I'm going to address whether I agree with these or not, then I'm going to go ahead and rate myself (after all, i'm 19 months past turning 30).
Today the first 15. Tomorrow the 2nd 15.
By 30, you should have ...
1. One old boyfriend you can imagine going back to and one who reminds you of how far you’ve come.
~ I think the theory behind this is not terrible, though all of mind remind me how how far I've come and I can't really imagine going back to any of them, not entirely, but in large part because they're all married.
2. A decent piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in your family.
~ This is nice, though maybe not number 2. I only have 3 items that are not pre-owned in my 1700 sq ft house, and I'm not sure any count as "decent."
3. Something perfect to wear if the employer or man of your dreams wants to see you in an hour.
~ I agree, and though I have 2 great suits, I'm not sure what I'd choose for the man of my dreams.
4. A purse, a suitcase, and an umbrella you’re not ashamed to be seen carrying.
~ YES. I believe in the power of nice accessories. To clarify, to me, I'm not ashamed of my target bags, so.... again, I'm not sure I'm living up to the full potential of this statement. If they mean something designer, I'm not, nor will I ever be, there.
5. A youth you’re content to move beyond.
~ This is probably a good idea, but I'd be willing to repeat a few previous years if given the option.
6. A past juicy enough that you’re looking forward to retelling it in your old age.
~ I'm not sure this is the best concept to strive for. Although, if your wildest story of days past is that time you danced around in your dorm at your non-dancing Christian college, I would argue you might need to get a little juicier. (that is a true story someone once told me about their wildest college time, not me. we could dance at my Christian college)
7. The realization that you are actually going to have an old age -- and some money set aside to help fund it.
~ This should be number 1. I have firmly realized this. However, at my current rate of savings I won't be able to retire til I'm 75, and hope that I'll die by 80. I do need to work on that.
8. An email address, a voice mailbox, and a bank account -- all of which nobody has access to but you.
~ does anyone who's 30 really NOT have these things???? I've had 2 since I was 17, and the 3rd at 22.
9. A résumé that is not even the slightest bit padded.
~ I agree with this one as well, although mine is not padded, it's not super impressive either...
10. One friend who always makes you laugh and one who lets you cry.
~ yes, yes, yes. Though, one thing I've learned that it seems the older you get the more flux there is in these friendships. People get married and have babies, and while they're always there for you, the ways that those friendships play out certainly change.
11. A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra.
~ One of these thigns is not like the other....I have two of these. I'll let you decide which one I'm missing.
12. Something ridiculously expensive that you bought for yourself, just because you deserve it.
~ I think it's the Dave Ramsey in me, but I'm not sure I agree with this. The 3 most expensive things I've ever bought myself are my house, my car, and a tv. Do any of these count??
13. The belief that you deserve it.
~ I'm going to go ahead and disagree with this. Sure, we should believe in ourselves, but the sense of entitlement to purchases and items and ways of living are the reasons most people are carrying thousands of dollars in debt. So, I'm going to go ahead and say - do you?? really???
14. A skin-care regimen, an exercise routine, and a plan for dealing with those few other facets of life that don’t get better after 30.
~ Agreed. I have all these things in theory, though time gets the best of me. I'd add to this statement, and the discipline to actually DO them!
15. A solid start on a satisfying career, a satisfying relationship, and all those other facets of life that do get better.
~ This sounds nice. But I am crap out of luck.
So- do you have all of these? Do you think we should??
